at approximately 1km away. Chez Briant is located about
fifteen minutes’ drive from the pretty market towns
of Civray and
Gencay, which offer excellent French markets,
as well as all general shopping and supermarket facilities,
restaurants and cafes. |

To get the most from Parc du Futuroscope (Jaunay-Clan; +33 5 49 49 59 82; www.futuroscope.com,
the futuristic theme park north of Poitiers, you will need a full day there.
Access-all-areas tickets cost 30 euros in high season (May–August)
for adults and for children. |

The
medieval city of Chauvigny offers a very nice falconry
show. The riveting Giants of the
Sky bird spectacle (Cité Médiévale;
+33 5 49 46 47 48; www.geantsduciel.com)
in Chauvigny’s castle ruins costs 8 euros for adults
and 5 euros for children. During July and August, there
are four shows a day. Portable audio guides in English,
which cost 5 euros. |

Make
a trip around the restored Romanesque Saint-Savin
Abbey (12 place de la Libération; +33 5
49 84 30 00), between Poitiers and Châteauroux
on the N151, both informative and enjoyable.
The abbey has a fine collection of early 12th-century
murals, which portray the life of monks who used
to live there.
Saint-Savin
Abbey and its 11th century frescos are part of the
UNESCO list of World Heritage.
Legend has it that it was founded by Charlemagne.

The
wonderfully impressive Vallée des Singes (Valley
of Monkeys) in southern Vienne (Romagne; +33 5 49 87
20 20; www.la-vallee-des-singes.fr)
allows visitors to wander around the park with over 20
species of semi-tame monkeys. Tickets cost 8.5 euros
for adults, and 5.5 euros for children. The site is open
from March to November. |
